A study of ultrasonic metal welding - Enlighten: Theses.
The methods and results presented in this thesis have significant implications for modelling friction stir spot welding, from optimising process conditions, to integration with microstructural models (to predict softening in the heat-affected zone, or the formation of intermetallics at the interface in dissimilar welds).
The patterns in which atoms are arranged in the solid state determine properties. These arrangements can be manipulated by altering parameters such as the chemical composition, temperature and magnetic field. A phase transformation is a change in the pattern of atoms. We work on phase transformations and the relationship between structure and properties.

The application of a variety of laser hybrid welding processes is wide and ranges from thin sheet metal welding to heavy section welding with plate thicknesses of up to 20 mm. Depending on the particular welding task, the choice of the appropriate laser or arc processes could be crucial to the successful application of the technology in terms of the welding process requirements (e.g. minimal.

A power supply incorporating a series-parallel load-resonant converter, capable of very efficient operation over a wide range of output power is presented. The series-parallel load-resonant converter is shown to have three pairs of resonant frequencies. Operation of the circuit at each of these resonant frequencies maintains zero current switching and high frequency operation.
